CO designers dominate
Central Otago designers may not have taken the top spot, but they dominated category wins at the Rural Women New Zealand WoolOn Creative Fashion Event held in Alexandra.
Alexandra’s Daphne Randle won the Judge Rock Handcrafted Award with Tyla Pearl and the Breen Construction Collections Award with Patterns in Paua.
Randle enjoyed experimenting with colour and texture effects to create a one-off original.
Her Patterns in Paua entry included three garments: a handknitted seamless cape buttoning at the neck over hot pants with a mock pocket effect and clasp fastening, as well as fingerless mittens; a handknitted check effect jacket that used pure merino wool in paua shades.
It included fingerless mittens and a fitted navy mini-skirt with pockets incorporated in the front clasp fastenings; a handknitted seamless modular style, using paua shades to create a poncho over hot pants, and fingerless mittens.
Wanaka based Heather Kerr won the Orora Kiwi Packaging Felted Award with her piece – Just Alice. Alexandra’s Maureen McKenzie won The Courthouse Special Occasion Award with her garment, Natural Beauty.
Her garment was a layered natural fine merino on silk tissue dress, cut to pattern.
Silk flowers had been added with a free-hand hemming stitch for decoration.
