Wanaka’s ‘‘chief nutter’’ Mal Law has finished Chasing the Dragon around the 1741km perimeter of Wales.
Another multisporter, Gavin Mason, is in hospital with the rare Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Both are hanging in there. Law has raised at least $35,000 for mental health charities (he talks at the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival in Wanaka on July 4).
Mason also stepped out recently, in the New Zealand Firefighter’s Staircase Challenge for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Now he is using a Zimmer frame.
He says he has been blown away by the community’s support, love and kind words.
Law is riffing about ‘‘Gates, bloody gates!’’ During 26 days running around Wales he opened more than a thousand.
Life is full of gates. These multisporters show they are not barriers. There’s always a way through, over, under, around. marjorie.cook @fairfaxmedia.co.nz
