Qtown triathlete moves to Cambridge
Promising Queenstown triathlete Reuben Thompson won’t be missing icy roads and riding in gloves when he relocates to Cambridge next month.
The 16-year-old quit Wakatipu High School last week and will move to St Peter’s Cambridge to train for the Youth Olympics.
The change happened quickly, Thompson said.
He visited St Peter’s School, with its 40 hectares of facilities, while in the town for the road cycling national champs in May.
‘‘A swimming coach asked for my personal bests - that was sorted within 10 minutes.
‘‘Then a running coach had a yarn.
‘‘It all happened so quick,’’ he said.
The school had a velodrome, a 10-lane outdoor pool and six-lane indoor pool and a running track on the site.
The velodrome was available to students for 400 hours a year.
‘‘Having facilities at the site will be great.’’
Thompson will rub shoulders with Olympians and some of the country’s top triathletes.
Ryan Sissons, Dan Hoy and Tony Dodds will be coaching and training at the same facilities daily.
‘‘In the summer the riding here was really nice but moving to Cambridge I will be surrounded by all these top-level athletes that I can do my thing with,’’ he said.
Thompson won’t miss training during Queenstown winters.
‘‘It’s hard because you get home from school at 4pm and the sun is already gone, but I used to get around it.’’
Thompson was ‘‘excited but nervous’’ about the move to the North Island.
He knew three people in Cambridge, but was confident he would meet like-minded students.
‘‘I’ve got one friend here who does a bit of tri, but up there it will be tonnes of them,’’ he said.
He was hoping to get one of two triathlon spots in the Youth Olympics representing Oceania, with qualification in March next year.
A key focus would be on improving swimming skills.
‘‘I will smash some sessions at the pool and have a stellar swim.’’
Thompson’s parents will be financially supporting him for the remainder of the year and he plans to apply for a scholarship for the last year in high school.
Thompson starts at the new school on July 24.
