Lee, Murray spearhead Kiwi Freeride team
Seven Wanaka athletes feature in the 10-strong Snow Sports New Zealand Freeride team announced on June 29.
The senior team members are Wanaka’s Craig Murray and Sam Lee, who are competing on the Freeride world tour team, and Hank Bilous and Anna Smoothy, who are on the world tour qualifier team.
Freeride junior team members are Alistair Garland, Manu Barnard, Isabella Thomsson (all Wanaka), Finn Duffy (Queenstown), Matt Sweet (Hamilton) and Hugo Cameron (Taupo).
Lee finished sixth overall in his first season on the 2017 Freeride World Tour, while Mur- ray qualified for the 2018 world tour after winning the Junior Ski European Championship title in 2016 and the 2017 Freeride Qualifying Tour.
Duffy won the Junior Snowboard Championships on the 2017 Junior Freeride World Tour, with Garland, Sweet and Cameron also posting strong results.
The team will be based at Treble Cone this winter, following a partnership agreement between the resort and Snow Sports NZ.
Freeride team manager Luke Hetzel said the talent was ‘‘impressive’’, while Treble Cone chief executive Jackie van der Voort said the skifield was thrilled to be the team’s official partner.
