Lee, Mur­ray spear­head Kiwi Freeride team

Seven Wanaka ath­letes fea­ture in the 10-strong Snow Sports New Zealand Freeride team an­nounced on June 29.

The se­nior team mem­bers are Wanaka’s Craig Mur­ray and Sam Lee, who are com­pet­ing on the Freeride world tour team, and Hank Bilous and Anna Smoothy, who are on the world tour qual­i­fier team.

Freeride ju­nior team mem­bers are Alis­tair Gar­land, Manu Barnard, Is­abella Thoms­son (all Wanaka), Finn Duffy (Queen­stown), Matt Sweet (Hamil­ton) and Hugo Cameron (Taupo).

Lee fin­ished sixth over­all in his first sea­son on the 2017 Freeride World Tour, while Mur- ray qual­i­fied for the 2018 world tour af­ter win­ning the Ju­nior Ski Euro­pean Cham­pi­onship ti­tle in 2016 and the 2017 Freeride Qual­i­fy­ing Tour.

Duffy won the Ju­nior Snow­board Cham­pi­onships on the 2017 Ju­nior Freeride World Tour, with Gar­land, Sweet and Cameron also post­ing strong re­sults.

The team will be based at Tre­ble Cone this win­ter, fol­low­ing a part­ner­ship agree­ment be­tween the re­sort and Snow Sports NZ.

Freeride team man­ager Luke Het­zel said the tal­ent was ‘‘im­pres­sive’’, while Tre­ble Cone chief ex­ec­u­tive Jackie van der Voort said the ski­field was thrilled to be the team’s of­fi­cial part­ner.
