FROM THE NEWS DESK
It is not before time the Queenstown Lakes District Council has begun preparing a masterplan for the centre of Queenstown.
Any regular visitors to town will know that congestion is making town a less pleasant place for vehicles and pedestrians. The situation will only get worse.
Call it the arterial route, Inner Links or the Man St Bypass - the need for the road around town to shift traffic from the main centre has been known for years. A 2001 story describes landscape architect Paddy Baxter calling for the council to get on with it.
It has been put off many times since - largely because of the cost.
This time there will be undoubtedly be controversy over the removal of the war memorial at the Queenstown Memorial Centre but it can be shifted. Moving the road is much more difficult.
This town desperately needs to be unlocked from the debilitating grip of traffic congestion. Let’s get on with this project.
