Police recognised for actions
Six police staff from Alexandra and Cromwell have received commendations for their actions at two serious incidents in the area in 2015 and 2016.
Central Otago mayor Tim Cadogan and Southern Police District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham presented awards to the staff in front of about 40 colleagues, family and friends at a ceremony in Alexandra.
Detective Gary Hyndman and station support officer Deb Hyndman received commissioner’s commendations for efforts at Cromwell in July 2015.
Mrs Hyndman received a call from a distraught woman who had found a suicide note from her husband. She was able to reassure and calm the woman and obtain sufficient detail to allow Detective Hyndman to find the man, who had a firearm and was threatening self-harm. After a lengthy negotiation Detective Hyndman persuaded him to surrender.
Sergeant Derek Ealson received a commissioner’s commendation and senior constables Arnold Hooykaas, Michael Colligan and Patrick Henderson received area commander’s commendations for efforts at Clyde in January 2016. A man had set fire to a car then went to a nearby house, occupied by his expartner and a baby. Ealson, supported by the other officers, negotiated with the man, and was able to gain the safe release of the woman and child.
