Male netballers prepare for national champs
The Queenstown-based men’s netball team lost to their Otago nemesis in the final of a home tournament on the weekend.
Coach Di Griffiths said the Maxraft Men’s team was earlier delighted to beat Otago in the round robin part of the competition, 32-20.
‘‘We’ve been doing this for about ten years now and it was the first time we beat Otago. It was great.’’
However, it came up against Otago in the finals of the fourteam competition, losing 28-24.
‘‘We played so well we made them make changes, which was awesome,’’ she said.
The team’s shooters Callum O’Connell and high school student Cooper Neilson showed good form while goal keeper Malcolm Salter played ‘‘out of his skin’’.
The team was now focused on preparing a squad of 10 to 12 players for the men’s national championships in Invercargill, in September. The last time they competed at the nationals was about five years ago when they were runner-up in the B grade.
Griffiths said the men were unbeaten in the Queenstownbased Saturday netball competition this season against female teams.
She enjoyed their fast style: ‘‘But it’s a challenge to teach guys something they think they already know.’’
