Students aim for national title
Three Otago Polytech students are hoping to reclaim a national culinary title.
Central Otago hospitality students Kayla Green, Sam Farr and Freda Zhang are preparing to compete at the annual Nestle Toque d’Or competition in Auckland on July 27.
They will compete against nine other teams of three from training institutes throughout New Zealand
NZChefs national president and organiser of the event, Graham Hawkes, said the students had all signed up for what would be a gruelling training schedule in the run up to the big event.
‘‘Many of the students will spend months training for the big day, while also juggling work and study commitments.’’
The competition has been running for over 26 years and only three years ago students from the polytech’s Central Otago campus won the supreme prize. More recently a team had won an innovation award.
Campus hospitality programme manager Jo Brun said some of the most competent students were selected to participate in the competition.
The teams had three hours to serve six people a three course meal using sponsor’s products.
The entree had to include Aoraki Salmon, the main was a lamb rack from Beef and Lamb New Zealand and the dessert was to include Nestle products.
