Wanaka club to host top NZ shooters
Some of New Zealand’s top shooters will be in Wanaka for the South Island sporting clay championships at the weekend.
Wanaka Gun Club president David Eckhoff said the club would be hosting about 80 shooters from around the country for one of the club’s biggest competitions of the year.
‘‘It’s going to be quite a big shoot. Some of the best shooters in the country will be there including Brian Deadman and Mark Vessey. It is really good for the club. We are only a little club but we own 40 acres which enables us to set it up for a simulated shoot as well as normal trap and skeet shooting. Visually it’s a nice wee set up too. Shooters will go on a bit of a hike and targets will be set up overlooking the river. ’’
The sporting clay event involved shooting 100 targets each day, over numerous shooting stations.
Wanaka shooters Rex Sanford and Bruce Scott were local favourites tipped to do well in the two-day event.
‘‘It’s the last major event of the year for Wanaka, after that it is the South Island down the line/ trap championships, then the skeet nationals in Christchurch.’’
