Sax four sup­ports youth

The award-win­ning Fe­rio Sax­o­phone Quartet from Britain has in­cluded Wanaka and Queen­stown on its three week tour of New Zealand.

The de­ci­sion to play in Cen­tral Otago is a coup for the re­gion’s youth mu­si­cians, with prof­its from the per­for­mance on Novem­ber 20 go­ing to As­pir­ing Young Mu­si­cians and the Cen­tral Otago Re­gional Train­ing Orches­tra.

The con­cert is the Wanaka Con­cert So­ci­ety’s 2017 pub­lic sea­son fi­nale and has been as­sisted by the Royal Over-Seas League.

The youth­ful Lon­don-based quartet Huw Wig­gin (so­prano), El­lie McMurray (alto), Jose Ban˜uls (tenor) and She­vaughan Beere (bari­tone) formed at the Royal Col­lege of Mu­sic and have gone on to com­mis­sion new works, sign with record la­bel Chan­dos, pro­duce their first CD and per­form at fes­ti­vals.

The pro­gramme tra­verses clas­sic for­mal­ity to bar­ber-shop.

The quartet is also judg­ing the Pettman ROSL Arts Schol­ar­ship auditions while in New Zealand.
