Sax four supports youth
The award-winning Ferio Saxophone Quartet from Britain has included Wanaka and Queenstown on its three week tour of New Zealand.
The decision to play in Central Otago is a coup for the region’s youth musicians, with profits from the performance on November 20 going to Aspiring Young Musicians and the Central Otago Regional Training Orchestra.
The concert is the Wanaka Concert Society’s 2017 public season finale and has been assisted by the Royal Over-Seas League.
The youthful London-based quartet Huw Wiggin (soprano), Ellie McMurray (alto), Jose Ban˜uls (tenor) and Shevaughan Beere (baritone) formed at the Royal College of Music and have gone on to commission new works, sign with record label Chandos, produce their first CD and perform at festivals.
The programme traverses classic formality to barber-shop.
The quartet is also judging the Pettman ROSL Arts Scholarship auditions while in New Zealand.
Lake Wanaka Centre, November 20, 7.30pm; Queenstown Memorial Hall, November 22, 7pm. Tickets $35/$30 from Gifted Design, 19 Helwick Street, Wanaka (cash) and online at Eventfinda. School children free.
