Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - Debbie Jamieson

We have had incredible displays of kindness and compassion in our communities in the last few days.

In Queenstown hundreds of people marched in support of the Wijerathne family and expressed their horror at the injustice of a system that would see this family sent to Sri Lanka.

For many children and adults it was the first time they had marched. Certainly it is very unusual to see the people of Queenstown so moved by an issue they have engaged in a public protest.

Over the hill in Roxburgh, where the town has essentially been cut off by water, mud and rocks, reporter Jo McKenzieMcLean also wants to give a shout out to the amazing community.

People were pouring in from around the region to help with the clean up and check on the elderly. There were neighbours helping neighbours and even the use of power, wifi, an apple and water from limited supplies for Jo from a kind shop owner.

We are so proud to be part of these communities.
