Watersports building fund reaches $1 million

Central Otago Mirror - - FOOD FOR THOUGHT -

The Wanaka Watersports Facility Trust’s building fund has reached $1 million and construction could start in September or October, with opening by mid next year.

Trust member Nic Blennerhassett has confirmed recent grants of $400,000 (Otago Community Trust), $50,000 (Sargood Bequest) and $650,000 (Central Lakes Trust).

The result of other funding applications to the Lottery Grants Board and the Alexander McMillan Trust should be known soon.

Total construction cost has been estimated at $1.65 million, Blennerhassett said.

‘‘We still have a bit to get. ‘‘But we are are hoping to get a reasonable amount and will probably go to the Wanaka community for the extra,’’ she said.

Extra costs included those charged by arborists and other professionals, she said.

The building consent application was ready to be submitted.

A pre-application meeting would be held with Queenstown Lakes District Council staff this week before the application is lodged.

The Environment Court granted resource consent in 2017.
