Ac­tiv­i­ties are be­ing held across CHB this week en­cour­ag­ing the com­mu­nity to learn and use Ma¯ ori lan­guage more of­ten as part of Te Wiki o te Reo Ma¯ ori - Ma¯ ori Lan­guage Week from Septem­ber 10-16.

CHB Dis­trict coun­cil chief ex­ec­u­tive Monique David­son said the theme this year is ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Ma¯ ori’ -‘Let’s make the Ma¯ ori lan­guage strong’.

“This week, we en­cour­age the com­mu­nity to start in­tro­duc­ing a lit­tle bit of te reo Ma¯ ori into your day,” she said. There will be af­ter-school ac­tiv­i­ties for chil­dren at the dis­trict li­braries, in­clud­ing poi mak­ing, Te Reo Rhyme Time, and a colour­ing com­pe­ti­tion in the CHB Mail.

Coun­cil has also part­nered with cafes in Waipawa and Waipuku­rau and provided a guide for cus­tomers on how to or­der their morn­ing dose of caf­feine in te reo Ma¯ ori.

The com­mu­nity can re­ceive up­dates, in­clud­ing a kupu (word) of the day, on coun­cil’s Face­book page.
