BRIEFS One wet weather crash

- BY GLYNN SHARP CHB Community Constable

CHB came through the recent wet period relatively unscathed apart from the usual slips and tree damage.

Police attended one vehicle crash where the weather played a small part. It was raining heavily when a vehicle pulled out of Tutanekai Street into the path of a southbound vehicle on Tavistock Rd in Waipukurau. The southbound vehicle allegedly had its left hand indicator switched on but failed to turn. This is a common problem, and does not mean the driver of the indicating vehicle is to blame. Never pull out until you are sure the indicating vehicle has begun to turn.

Around midday on September 11, a 51-year-old male was seriously assaulted by a 21-yearold male. A police Taser was deployed and the offender arrested. He has been remanded in custody to appear in the Hastings court later this month. The victim was treated at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and is recovering well.

That night, a visitor from Australia staying with family at a Reservoir Rd address had his rental car broken into and his wallet, passport, laptop and workrelated documents stolen. The car was parked down a private driveway beside the house. Anyone with any knowledge of the offender or who may have found any documents, which may have been dumped, are asked to contact police.

Around 7pm on September 12, a group of young males were walking on Takapau Rd. One of them punched a small window, which broke and caused a serious gash to the offender’s arm. His explanation was he had been angry as a result of an argument with one of his friends. Reparation will be made.

An 18-year-old intoxicated male was arrested for behavioural offences on Mt Herbert Rd. He was initially warned by a police officer, but he chose to ignore the advice, challenging the police officer to do something about it. By the time he arrived at the station cells, he was a very sorry boy.

Also on September 12, police stopped a stolen vehicle in the Middle Rd area. The driver was arrested and the car returned to its Hastings owner.
