New lease of life for building

Despite rumours to the contrary, Waipukurau’s iconic Tavistock Hotel is not up for demolition, says owner Jackie Chang.

Rumours had started to circulate after last month’s sudden closure of Breakers Restaurant and Crossroads Bar, which were both located in the old hotel.

The building’s warrant of fitness had also lapsed.

Mr Chang says he is working to get new tenants into both businesses as soon as possible and get both the restaurant and bar open again. Work is already under way towards renewing the lapsed warrant of fitness.

“I am 100 per cent committed to keeping the Tavistock Hotel open and running,” he said. “I have invested a lot of money in the building and I want it to be fully tenanted.

“The accommodation upstairs in the hotel is still tenanted.”
