FROM THE EDITOR
Perspective is an interesting thing.
I read a review of a show I went to last week and it differed greatly from my view. The reviewer didn’t like Steel Magnolias. I, seeing it with my daughter, loved it. Whether that’s because it’s a show about female friendship and the other reviewer was a man, I don’t know.
The discussion about Materia Turei also prompted a fair amount of debate in the office It was heated, honest and unfailingly interesting.
The standout issue for me was around perspective. For many, Turei’s decision was a black and white issue. For others, there were many shades of grey. And it depended a lot on social circumstance.
We’d be mad to think there’s no such thing as poverty in this country, and we’d be equally mad to think there’s no such thing as privilege.
Both, however, can be tricky to identify and both can be offensive.
I hope we’re brave enough as a nation to identify and confront both.
