Mag­gie Ma al­ready has an im­pres­sive list of per­form­ing cred­its, qual­i­fi­ca­tions and mas­ter­classes un­der her belt but she is still only in year 11 at Burn­side High School. Ma is a re­mark­able mu­si­cian who dis­plays a ma­tu­rity to her play­ing, along with a deep ex­pres­sive un­der­stand­ing of the mu­sic and a tech­nique to match.

Ma played two pieces to­day – Grieg’s for­mi­da­ble Sonata for ‘Cello and Pi­ano in A mi­nor and Tchaikovsky’s Valse Scherzo, the for­mer a pas­sion­ate out­pour­ing of emo­tion and mu­si­cal ideas, the sec­ond a show pony of vir­tu­osic der­ring-do that, while hardly pro­found, does its best in a short space of time to cover as many as­pects of ‘cello play­ing as it pos­si­bly can.

The Grieg is a work un­fa­mil­iar to many but be­comes in­stantly recog­nis­able due to the crosspol­li­na­tion, in­ten­tional or oth­er­wise, of much of the melodic ma­te­rial from other works. I men­tion this be­cause there are dis-
