OUTSTANDING YOUNG MUSICIANS PRESENTED BY CONCERTS FOR CHRISTCHURCH FOUNDATION TRUST.
Maggie Ma already has an impressive list of performing credits, qualifications and masterclasses under her belt but she is still only in year 11 at Burnside High School. Ma is a remarkable musician who displays a maturity to her playing, along with a deep expressive understanding of the music and a technique to match.
Ma played two pieces today – Grieg’s formidable Sonata for ‘Cello and Piano in A minor and Tchaikovsky’s Valse Scherzo, the former a passionate outpouring of emotion and musical ideas, the second a show pony of virtuosic derring-do that, while hardly profound, does its best in a short space of time to cover as many aspects of ‘cello playing as it possibly can.
The Grieg is a work unfamiliar to many but becomes instantly recognisable due to the crosspollination, intentional or otherwise, of much of the melodic material from other works. I mention this because there are dis-
