CGHS-Rangi re­match in Whe­lan fi­nal

Rangi Ruru and Christchurch Girls’ will go head to head for the women’s Whe­lan Tro­phy for the sec­ond straight year in the Can­ter­bury Sec­ondary Schools’ bas­ket­ball league.

De­fend­ing cham­pi­ons Rangi Ruru got up for a 61-59 win over St An­drew’s in the semi-fi­nals while Christchurch Girls’ held on for a 64-62 win over Mid­dle­ton. Rangi Ruru, led by Ju­nior Tall Fern and last year’s fi­nal MVP Esra McGoldrick, will go in as favourites look­ing to re­peat last year’s 74-62 win.

In Whe­lan di­vi­sion 2, St Mar­garet’s will meet Avon­side in the fi­nal. St Mar­garet’s needed over­time to see off Ellesmere 67-57 while Avon­side held on for a 53-50 win over Villa Maria.

In the men’s Thomp­son Tro­phy Cash­mere comes up against Christ’s Col­lege. The top seeded Cash­mere had a solid 77-52 win over Shirley to head into the fi­nal chas­ing an un­beaten sea­son. Christ’s had a 105-70 win over Ran­giora, who couldn’t repli­cate their gi­ant killing hero­ics from the quar­ter-fi­nals.

In Thomp­son di­vi­sion 2, Hill­mor­ton had a hard fought 84-82 win over St Thomas while Pa­panui beat Cathe­dral 71-52.
