CGHS-Rangi rematch in Whelan final
Rangi Ruru and Christchurch Girls’ will go head to head for the women’s Whelan Trophy for the second straight year in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ basketball league.
Defending champions Rangi Ruru got up for a 61-59 win over St Andrew’s in the semi-finals while Christchurch Girls’ held on for a 64-62 win over Middleton. Rangi Ruru, led by Junior Tall Fern and last year’s final MVP Esra McGoldrick, will go in as favourites looking to repeat last year’s 74-62 win.
In Whelan division 2, St Margaret’s will meet Avonside in the final. St Margaret’s needed overtime to see off Ellesmere 67-57 while Avonside held on for a 53-50 win over Villa Maria.
In the men’s Thompson Trophy Cashmere comes up against Christ’s College. The top seeded Cashmere had a solid 77-52 win over Shirley to head into the final chasing an unbeaten season. Christ’s had a 105-70 win over Rangiora, who couldn’t replicate their giant killing heroics from the quarter-finals.
In Thompson division 2, Hillmorton had a hard fought 84-82 win over St Thomas while Papanui beat Cathedral 71-52.
