Candidate Mei Reedy-Taare said homelessness, poverty, unemployment and high imprisonment rates were symptoms of a wider systemic problem.

‘‘Until we address the root causes of these issues disparities will continue to exist.’’

She said tenants in many areas were spending more of their income on rent and that added pressure to wha¯nau seeking to buy a house, especially as wage increases struggled to keep pace with rising housing costs.

The Ma¯ori Party was committed to eliminating poverty, disparity and inequality and would increase the focus of the Ministerial Committee on Poverty with a renewed work program to address the drivers of poverty for wha¯nau, Reedy-Taare said.
