Move easily with a scooter

Christchurch Mail - - GARDENING -

Getting outside to enjoy the blossom, blue skies and warmer weather of spring couldn’t be easier than with a powered mobility scooter.

Many of the finest models in Christchurch can be found at Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service Ltd, a family business run by Christine and Gerald Curtis for almost 30 years.

Christine says mobility scooters have come a long way over the past decade and now offer greater stability, smoother operation and the ability to travel in comfort for up to 50 kilometres between charges, depending on the model and how it is used.

Scooters for almost every scenario are available through Wheelchair Scooter Sales/ Service, with many able to be folded or separated into two pieces for transporting by car.

Gerald, an engineer specialised in mobility equipment, can also customise scooters by request, for example by fitting additional storage or a carrier for golf clubs.

However, the greatest benefits of owning a motorised scooter are the enhanced social opportunities they support and the option of continuing to live an independent life, Christine says.

‘‘A lot of people go to mobility scooters after they can’t get their licence renewed, and others use them as a second form of transport, taking them down to the shops and saving on gas, then using their car for longer trips,’’ she says.

‘‘It’s a social thing, too. If they’re riding along the footpath they can interact with people in their gardens or people they see along the way. They don’t have to wait for other people to take them somewhere, they can just go themselves.’’

Christine says because choosing a mobility scooter is a big decision, she and Gerald work closely with customers to find the model that is right for them. Gerald then personally delivers the scooter to the customer’s home and always spends time with the user before he leaves to make sure they are comfortable and confident using the scooter.

Trials are available and a showroom in Parklands allows people to try several models before making a decision.

Wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility support equipment are also available from Wheelchair Scooter Sales/Service, with many items able to be hired.

A full range of maintenance services ensures products continue to operate in top condition for many years.
