Christchurch Mail - - MOTORING - JONATHAN LEASK

Rangiora’s Matt Penrose had a convincing win in the Mt Thomas Gravel Sprint in North Canterbury on Sunday.

Penrose (Subaru WRX) finished with a five second winning margin from Ohoka’s Job Quantock (Skoda AP4).

Rangiora’s Matt Summerfield was a further second back in a borrowed Mitsubishi Evo 3.

It was a case of another title to hand over for Summerfield who was also unable to defend his titles in the Hanmer Rally and Ashley Forest sprint last month.

Drivers raced the clock over a 4km forestry road on Mt Thomas which has a bit of everything, covering a technical climb then a ridge line through the forest and a twisty downhill finish.

Rangiora teenager Ari Pettigrew only just beat the experienced Andrew Sim ( Christchurch) by less than 0.2 seconds in the battle of the Ford Fiestas in class 3 (1600cc+).

In class 2 (1301-1600cc) was taken out by David Birkett (Levin) after a great battle with the fast improving Nick Marston (Sprinter).

Christchurch’s Chris Herdman (Starlet) dominated class 1 (0-1300cc) finishing five seconds clear of fellow Christchurch driver Ryan Blacktopp (Starlet).

Several of the drivers now turn their attention to the fifth round of the New Zealand Rally Championship, the Rally Waitomo, on October 14.
