Halswell clinch Springston Trophy
North Canterbury had five teams finish in the top 10 but were not on top at the 2017 Springston Trophy pony club championship in Rakaia at the weekend.
In the end it was the 2014 and 2015 runners-up Halswell Crusaders that finally reached the top of the podium after a rainaffected event. It was the first time since 2009 that a North Canterbury Club didn’t take home the trophy.
Defending champions View Hill Red had to settle for second place with View Hill Silver in third. Halswell finished on 130.23 to win, after being in third place for most of the weekend.
View Hill Red took the lead after the dressage, winning the dressage award, and maintained top spot after a rain affected crosscountry only to slip up on the show jumping to finish on 141.60.
View Hill Silver had been in second but were also overtaken by Halswell in the showjumping with a final score of 142.80.
Roydvale were fourth on 153.01 with Eyreton Navy, winners in 2014 and 2015 and runners up last year, were fifth on 163.62.
Capping a great weekend for the club, View Hill White were sixth on 167.89, and collected the award for horse mastership.
Greymouth Green adn Gold were seventh and eighth respect- ively with a composite CentralSouthland-Lorneville-Makarewa team in ninth.
Kaiapoi Black rounded out the top 10 on 181.81.
It was a difficult weekend for the Kaiapoi-Eyreton Composite team.
‘‘We had a horse die, Cowboy, on the Thursday prior to the competition and then Emily Heald had a fall and broke her wrist,’’ Kaiapoi Pony Club president Tony Gallop said.
Rangiora were 12th, Amberley 13th, and Okuku 18th with a total of 39 teams attending this years competition.
Individually, Halswell’s Lucy Turner (Astek - Victor) had the top score of 28.38 in the Seniors (105cm) and her teammate Isabella Ashworth (Mr J F Hawk) was second best on 32.38 with View Hill Silver’s Jessie Fitzjohn (Whats The Buzz) third on 32.5.
In the Intermediate (95cm) grade, View Hill Red’s Lucy Cochrane (Inspector Gadget) had the best score of 28.09, followed by teammate Hannah Vandem Broe (Dare to be Dublin) on 32.2. Fabriana McQuarrie (Yippie Ki Yay) was third on 33.82.
View Hill Red also had the top junior (80cm), with Charlotte Thomas (Te Puke) scoring 26.84. Waimea’s Josefin Lerbs (Penelope) was second on 29.74 and with 30.39 Roydvale’s Kate Gutry (Lewiston) was third.
Rain made for testing conditions on the cross country course and showjumping, but most riders made the adjustment.
Kaiapoi Black’s Charlotte Coleman (My Rocketman) had the top dressage score of any individual (25.13).
