North Canty’s winning Waipara wine
Raise a glass to the team at Waipara Hills, who are consistently producing some of the country’s top wines.
The winery was the big winner at the New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition and Canterbury Wine Competition judging weekend in Christchurch this month.
Vineyard manager Jean-Luc Dufour said the winery’s recent successes were down to an amazing team of dedicated workers, who were all rightfully very pleased and proud.
Dufour said it also helped that the Waipara region was made for producing top-class Riesling, and he should know — it is his favourite wine, and he has been at the winery since 1994, the same year the first noble grapes were planted.
Winemaker Andrew Brown was also delighted with the awards.
‘‘To be awarded Supreme Champion Wine in Show is a great achievement for the whole Waipara Hills team, where our winemaking starts in the vineyard.
‘‘It’s fantastic to see that a variety like Riesling can stand out from the pack and this award recognises that the Waipara Valley is producing some of the finest aromatics in New Zealand.’’
Nearly 300 wines were judged over two days by a blind panel of international and national wine judges, with the results announced last week.
Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Riesling 2016 was judged as the Supreme Champion Wine in Show and Supreme Champion Canterbury Wine in Show as part of the new Canterbury Wine Com- petition.
Chairman of judges Jim Harre said the team at Waipara Hills had demonstrated the highest quality of winemaking again this year.
‘‘It’s excellent to see this quality shine through each year and we were delighted that their wines have again shown such a high standard.’’
