Impress with new spouting

Christchurch Mail - - RETAIL THERAPY -

The wettest season Christchurch has seen in decades is at last coming to an end, giving spouting systems a welcome break and homeowners the chance to tend to a line of defence that is both essential for keeping a property watertight and creating a good impression.

By painting fascia boards at the same time as repairing or replacing corroded and uneven gutters, even the most dated home can be brought into the 21st century with a smart new look.

Streamline Spouting Systems owner Danie Van Biljon says many people have been waiting for the weather to clear before doing something about old spouting.

With the company able to paint and protect fascia boards while installing new spouting, Danie expects his team will be busy for several months giving attractive new accents to homes across Canterbury.

Seamless spouting is available in a wide range of colours for a natural fit with the company’s fascia covers, which conceal ageing timber for an instantly appealing new style that never needs repainting.

‘‘Covering or painting fascia panels protects the timber, which is very important for the long-term interests of your home,’’ Danie says.

‘‘It also looks really good; you can put new spouting and fascia covers on a brick house from the 1960s and it suddenly starts looking quite modern.

‘‘As far as planning and expense goes, it’s definitely easier to do the fascia boards and spouting at the same time,’’ he says.

Streamline Spouting Systems deals with spouting issues of all kinds, from consulting on insurance claims and quoting on replacements costs to retrofitting snow straps and installing complete systems on new-builds.

Danie advises people to take a look at their spouting the next time they’re in the garden, to see if they can spot any issues best dealt with in the dry months.

‘‘If you wait until winter, you may not have the protection when you need it,’’ he says.

In post-earthquake Christchurch, one of the most serious spouting problems relates to gutters that, due to shifting ground, no longer properly channel water into a downpipe.

This can cause water to potentially overflow into wall cavities and ceiling spaces, creating unseen damage.
