Art and more in a beautiful NC garden
More than 90 leading and emerging New Zealand contemporary artists will gather to exhibit at the annual Art in a Garden, held at the historic Flaxmere Gardens from October 26 to 29.
Art in a Garden director and curator Laura Forbes said the gardens, which have a National Significance rating, were the perfect setting for the sculptures, while the paintings and other artworks would be displayed in a large converted historic woolshed.
With the artists involved contributing sculptures, paintings, photography, prints and ceramics, jewellery and glass, Forbes said there would be a wide variety of mediums on display.
‘‘We want to inspire and engage our visitors by giving them a truly creative experience in the heart of rural North Canterbury,’’ she said.
‘‘One of the greatest challenges an artist can face is making his or her art more accessible to the general public. Having an awesome rural setting and things happening alongside the artists’ exhibits brings a whole new dimension to the way artists are able to interact with the public through their work.’’
Renowned Christchurch sculptor Llew Summers, a huge supporter of the Art in a Garden concept, said it was important for artists to have a platform to promote and show their work to a wider audience base – one which went beyond exhibiting in galleries.
Printmaker Ben Reid, who is also exhibiting at Art in a Garden, said this kind of exhibition provided him with a real opportunity to package his art with his conservation message and reach people who might not otherwise get the chance to see his art.
The four-day event, which is the largest annual art exhibition in the South Island, is now in its 15th year. It attracted 2,000 visitors last year, and has a good family vibe, which Forbes said was important.
‘‘We believe strongly that learning to create and appreciate visual aesthetics at a young age are some of the building blocks of child development and sets off a lifelong relationship with the arts.’’
