The End of the Kombi – and an era

Classic Driver - - NEWS & EVENTS -

December 31 not only marks the end of 2013, it is also the end of the longest production run in automotive history.

VW have announced that Brazilian production of the VW type 2 (known to the rest of us as the Kombi) is to cease at the end of the year. First seen in 1949, the end of the Kombi also is the end of the rear-engined VW, a mere 78 years since the first KDF-Wagen hit the Autobahn in 1935.

To farewell the world’s original people mover, the Kombined VW Owners Club of Wellington are holding a farewell cruise/wake on 8 December and if you turn to page 52, Classic Driver tries out a one family owner 1964 Kombi.
