McLaren at 50

Classic Driver - - EOIN YOUNG’S DIARY -

Bruce McLaren was 26 when he started his official racing team on September 2, 1963. The first team workshop base was a ghastly little shed shared with road graders and equipment.

Wal Willmott remembers working in the ‘The Shed’ at New Malden which was all we could afford to rent before Bruce started scoring prize money.

“That was where we cut up the Zerex-Cooper and repowered it with the Oldsmobile V8. We had done Oulton Park and Silverstone with a 4-cylinder 2.7-litre Coventry-Climax.”

The notorious grader shed that was the first McLaren workshop (briefly) back in 1963.
