Me and Miss World

Classic Driver - - EOIN YOUNG’S DIARY -

Put yourself in my place. Boarding a 707 at Honolulu en route to Auckland in 1973, wife Sandra and daughter Selina were walking ahead down the aisle in First Class when this blonde vision stands up in front of me and says “It’s Eoin, isn’t it?” Help! What would you do? “Remember me? Marjie… Marjie Wallace.” The first American to be crowned Miss World in 1973. She asks if she can come and sit with us in Economy. My daughter’s eyes are on sticks – how can my father know this amazing lady?

Marjie was McLaren racer Peter Revson’s girlfriend and we’d met during the season. It was a bumpy road for Marjie. She held the title as the world’s most beauteous gal for just three months, dropped because she wanted to travel with Revvy on his motor racing season, rather than fulfil a 12-month social contract as Miss World.

Then Peter, heir to the Revlon cosmetics fortune, was killed in a crash testing a Shadow at Kyalami, and the romance was tragically over.

And why did Marjie want to come back for an hour or so over the Pacific, and chat with the Youngs?

Because her neighbour in First Class was ‘hitting on her’ – trying to chat her up!

Peter Revson and Miss World, Margie Wallace.
