Vale Dave McKinney

Classic Driver - - HOLMAN -

I was sad to note the passing of Dave McKinney, NZ motor sport historian and writer of some repute.

I first met Dave after he’d set the questions for my first TV appearance, on Mastermind in the mid ’80s (F1 racing in the 1960s, thank you for asking. I didn’t win but didn’t come last either!). We kept in touch for quite a while after he went to the UK and I caught up with Dave in 1990 when he kindly took me to a couple of the famous classic car dealers tucked away in little London Mews showrooms, like Dan Margulies.

Dave had not been in good health for a while. Sadly, he hadn’t yet finished a major book on NZ motor racing history so it’s good to know that Milan Fistonic plans to see the project to fruition.

As well as being a mine of information about New Zealand’s racing history, Dave spent much time unravelling the confusing history of Maserati 250Fs, on which he wrote a first class book. It was nice to see, then, that Hall & Hall Ltd. made chassis 2526 available for Dave’s funeral in March. RIP.
