Heriot stuns Lawrence

Heriot put together a stunning display to signal their return to form in the South Otago rugby competition last Saturday, by taking home the West Otago Shield.

They demolished Lawrence 48-7 at Lawrence. Heriot ran in eight tries and kept Lawrence scoreless for the whole second half. Lawrence was guilty of dropping-off tackles, and the Heriot ball runners didn’t need a second invitation. Heriot backs Chris Roulston and Kini Natuna both scored doubles. Fullback Lee Stiven scored a try, kicked four conversions and received a well earned man of the match.

Hayden Wyber scored all Lawrence’s points.

Toko retained the Reg Phillip Trophy with a 43-36 win over Owaka at Owaka. The Toko side ran riot in the first half with impressive control, scoring five first half tries and went into the break 36-7 ahead.

The second half was a complete reversal of the first. Toko had no answer as Owaka ran in five second half tries of their own. The only Toko points of the second half was a penalty try .

Crescent successfully defended the Ian Reid Memorial Trophy with a 34-26 win over Clinton at Kaitangata. It was another tight team performance from the coal miners who scored six tries to the opposition’s four. Crescent winger Sam Villiamu scored twice, thanks to quick ball from a turnover. Number Eight Zack Dawson had a strong game for the Clinton side. He ran straight and hard all day and put a good shift in for his side. Ayden Edwards was Crescent’s best on the day.

Clutha stumbled to a sixth straight win, coming from behind to beat Clutha Valley 33-23 after being down 13-12 at halftime. It was a very lacklustre performance from the Clutha side. The introduction of Tyler Bichan in the second spell changed Clutha’s fortunes. Bichan added some much needed composure and a quick turn of pace late in the game. He scored a hat-trick off the bench to take the game away from Valley. The midfield combination of Bibi Teriuea and Jonny Sargent stood up for Valley. Matt Barton and Matt Korteweg were Clutha’s best players.
