Under 65kg team cleans up
The under 65kg South West Otago rugby team pulled-off an impressive win for their corner of the province at the recent Otago Primary Rugby weight grade tournament held at Molyneux Park, Alexandra.
It had been eight years since a south-west team had won this grade, coach Stephen Dent said.
They struck some good form at their first tournament on June 11 at Milton, with a 26-21 win over Central Otago, and Metro Gold, 49-24. The second tournament in Dunedin on July 2 produced a 52-19 win over Metro Blue, but a 24-31 loss to Central Otago. However, at the Alexandra tournament on July 30, South West won convincingly over Metro Gold 52-5, and Metro Blue 46-19.
The team was coached by Laurie Ferguson and Stephen Dent and managed by Chris Stirling. Team members Keegan Ferguson, Jack Blair, Lucas Anderson, Jon-Duncan McLeod and Ethan Stirling were also selected to represent Otago under 65kg at upcoming tournaments against other regions.
