FROM THE NEWS DESK
In my travels across the southern region for Stuff and its community papers, I always look forward to spells in South Otago.
I’ve been heading south from my home in Brighton to fill in at the Leader for several years now, and it’s one journey I never fail to enjoy, with a thrill of expectation for the days - and occasionally months - ahead. Because Clutha ticks the ‘‘community’’ box in so many ways. Above all, it feels like a genuine community, with friendly, straightforward people who ‘‘say what they’ll do, then do what they say.’’
I may occasionally be regarded with a wry smile and a wink - as a Brit townie wrestling with the finer points of, say, sheep drenching, or the difference between ‘‘chips’’ and ‘‘crisps’’ - but the humour’s always there to be shared in, rather than endured.
The good people of Clutha have never failed to make me feel welcome, and have frequently gone that classic Kiwi extra mile to put an interesting community story my way. So here I amagain, till September 21, anyhow. Look forward to catching up soon.
