Nuggets rescue nominated
A Nugget Point kayak rescue has been nominated for a supreme award to be decided next week.
Kaka Point surf life savers Andrew Budge and Paul Richardson are nominated among finalists in the BP Rescue of the Year category at next Saturday’s Surf Life Saving NZ Awards of Excellence in Auckland.
The February 14 joint IRB and helicopter rescue had come about as the result of a wildlife snapshot gone wrong, with a female kayaker in her 50s capsizing while attempting to photograph fur seals basking on cliff-base Nugget Point rocks nearby.
Despite suffering from cold and a gash to her leg, the woman was in good spirits when help arrived in the Kaka Point IRB.
Budge said he hadn’t expected the incident – with its happy outcome – to be recognised to such a significant extent, after previously making BP Rescue of the Month for February.
‘‘It’s an honour both personally for Paul and me, and for Kaka Point Club, to be recognised with an Award of Excellence nomination. To be honest, we didn’t expect it to go so far.’’
Many of the other nominees were more deserving, he believed.
Surf Life Saving NZ’s official citation praised the South Otago pair, stating ‘‘Andrew and Paul demonstrated great skill throughout the incident to deal with the surf conditions and proximity to the rocks’’.
