Top honours for South Otago bowler
A stellar season for young South Otago indoor bowler Alanna Preddy has been crowned with a Player of the Year accolade.
Preddy, 23, accepted the award at an end of year ceremony held in Balclutha Memorial Hall on Saturday night, after also becoming the youngest player to receive her centre Gold Star earlier this year, in May.
The Player of the Year nod was all the sweeter for pipping her mother Shona to the post this season.
‘‘It feels good to beat Mum to Player of the Year. I’m pretty happy,’’ Preddy said.
In fact, Preddy would enjoy boasting rights throughout her household, as twin awards this year also came at the expense of previous holder, brother Stephen.
Subsequent to notching up her Gold Star, Preddy went on to gain two more titles this year, with wins in the South Otago Open fours and the women’s singles.
She was also runner-up in the mixed fours.
Highlight of her season, however, had been playing in the South Island team last month, skipping the triples team, and going on to win the Interisland medal by beating North Island 2-1.
‘‘I feel proud to have brought home an Interisland medal, especially skipping the team.
It made up for last time skipping the triples in 2013, when we didn’t do so well,’’ Preddy said.
The young champ divides her time nowadays between her birthplace of Balclutha, and Dunedin, where she lives and works with partner Chris.
Giving a little back to the sport, the pair help run indoor weekend bowling sessions for the blind at South Dunedin’s Blind Foundation Otago headquarters.
Indoor bowls was a sport open to all, Preddy said.
‘‘Blind people can play, anyone can play. It’s friendly and competitive, and pretty sociable.’’
After accompanying the Otago Blind Indoor Bowling Club to Hamilton for the nationals over Labour Weekend, Preddy said she would rest up until next season. At Saturday night’s South Otago awards ceremony, Marilyn Paterson also gained her Gold Star, Christine King 10 titles, David Grant 15 titles, and Eileen Grant and Robert Wilson 25 titles each.
Alanna Preddy became South Otago Indoor Bowler of the Year.
