Clutha Leader - - OUT & ABOUT -

By 1968, it became clear to the Clutha County Council that the bridge was nearing the end of its useful life.

Although it was recognised that difficulty could be experienced in maintaining the old bridge in the meantime, the decision was taken that a start should be made on the construction of a new permanent bridge in the 1971-72 year.

This proved to be a wise and well timed decision.

By November 1972, running planks had already started lifting off the bridge and completion of the new bridge had become a matter of urgency.
