...over South Otago skies
South Otago Aero Club is expecting between 20 and 30 competitors at the Flying NZ Lakes Regional Rally at Balclutha on Friday and Saturday.
The club was to have hosted the same national qualifier last year, but had to cancel the event because the grounds flooded in heavy rains, which meant the rally had to be moved to the South Canterbury Aero Club, at Timaru.
The Timaru club is hosting the Flying NZ 2018 National Championships from February 28 to March 3.
At this event, the Wings Trophy International competition between New Zealand and Australia will be held. It alternates each year between countries.
The New Zealand team is selected from the highest performing competitors at the regional rallies and the previous years’ national winners.
Clubs compete regionally to gain entry to the nationals.
Members compete in events that test their ability in pre-flight preparation, precision circuits and landing.
Events include precision flying and aerobatics, along with life raft dropping, formation flying, bombing, navigation and streamer cutting.
The rally is at the aerodrome on Glasgow St, Balclutha.
Public are welcome to attend. Training flights are available for those interested in having lessons with club instructors.
