Steep St taken under council wing

Clutha Leader - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - MARY-JO TOHILL

Lawrence’s ‘‘iconic’’ Steep St Domain could end up being maintained by the Clutha District Council.

At its recent meeting, the Lawrence Tuapeka Community Board discussed the dramatic stand of trees off Gabriel’s Gully Rd that had become one of the often-used images of Lawrence.

It was cleared of blackberry brambles last year, in a project led by Steven Robertson, who developed the Bellview Wetlands Reserve south on State Highway 8.

It was decided that the Clutha District Council would investigate encompassing the whole domain into a reserve management plan and the long term plan so provision could be made for its maintenance under the guidance of a professional arborist.

It was initially unclear what role the council could take in future maintenance, because most of the hillside came under DOC control.

However, after the meeting Clutha District Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt said the domain was gazetted reserve and that DOC had earmarked the domain for the council’s control and management in the future.
