South Otago Anglican Family Care has introduced a new programme ‘‘Family Start’’ that specifically targets abuse in families.

Anglican Family Care is the major social service provider in South Otago, and the new Family Start programme addresses a need in the community, South team leader Jane Hutton said.

‘‘This is a chance for babies in 2018 to have a better start in life than their parents may have received. We are hoping it will make a big change to our community in time, and help break the cycle of abuse.’’

It supports expectant parents and parents of new-born and young chil- dren, and incorporates the latest in child development research.

‘‘For instance, during a baby’s first three years, talk is the biggest single factor driving brain growth and preschool readiness.

‘‘We teach and encourage parents how to talk to their babies through a range of different activities. We support families who are struggling with challenges or problems that may make it harder for them to care for their baby or young child.

‘‘Our focus is the health, education, safety and development of the child and supporting parents to achieve their goals.’’
