Leeper wins tournament
This year’s Seeka Whangamata Men’s Masters tournament held recently at the Titoki course drew a field of 128 players from 39 clubs playing 54 holes over three days.
A golfing weekend away at a popular beach location makes this event an extremely popular annual getaway, with the full field sign going up within a few days of entries opening.
The weather over the weekend was great for golf, fine with a bit of wind. The field was divided into two sections based on age which this year saw the age split at 57.
Mike Leeper (Pupuke) held the honours at the end of the first day with a 71, two shots better than Dave Singer (Waitakere) and a group of three who were one shot further back.
At the end of the second day, the field had closed up with three players equal on 146 — Mike Leeper, Philip Hunter (Morrinsville) and Bryan Grafas (Whangamata), with Dave Cooke (Tauranga) one shot back.
Sunday came with a continuation of the fine weather and close scoring golf.
Gareth Chitty (Titirangi) shot the best round of the day but was unable to catch up with two of the leaders who finished equal first on 217 — Mike Leeper and Philip Hunter.
An extremely exciting playoff that went to sudden death after the first two holes ultimately saw Mike Leeper come through, winning on the fifth play off hole and taking the tournament honours for the second year in a row.
Another highlight of the tournament was a hole in one on the 154m No 17 hole by Jim Denyer from Redwood Park.
A well-attended prizegiving ceremony followed on late Sunday afternoon. Sponsors and local businesses combined with the Whangamata Golf Club to build a prize list worth more than $14,000.
