Cars in Coro­man­del for rally champs

A 60-car field, in­clud­ing World Rally Cham­pi­onship star Hayden Paddon, is ex­pected for the fifth round of the New Zealand Rally Cham­pi­onship this week­end around Whi­tianga and north of Coro­man­del Town.

Rally Head­quar­ters are at the Mer­cury Bay Multi-sports Park and spec­ta­tors are wel­come to view the cars.

"The Coro­man­del com­mu­ni­ties are ex­cel­lent hosts and we ap­pre­ci­ate the in­put this event has to our lo­cal econ­omy, as well as be­ing an at­trac­tion for any­one who has a love of fast cars," Thames-coro­man­del Dis­trict Mayor San­dra Goudie said.

‘‘The Rally is tele­vised ex­ten­sively both na­tion­ally and in­ter­na­tion­ally, a fan­tas­tic op­por­tu­nity to show­case the Coro­man­del's stun­ning scenery and pro­mote our dis­trict to vis­i­tors.’’

Through­out the day the rally driv­ers will be tack­ling 121km of spe­cial stages on pub­lic roads. Road clo­sures will be in place in Mer­cury Bay and Coro­man­del. There will be a spe­cial spectator sec­tion along Joan Gaskell Drive, Whi­tianga on the Satur­day af­ter­noon.

Road clo­sures: Port Charles Road, Waikawau Rd, Tu­ateawa Rd, Kennedy Bay Rd. Port Charles Road from the in­ter­sec­tion of Port Jack­son and Colville roads and all of Waikawai Beach Rd, all of Tu­ateawa Road, and Kennedy Bay Road to house num­ber 1424.
