Cars in Coromandel for rally champs
A 60-car field, including World Rally Championship star Hayden Paddon, is expected for the fifth round of the New Zealand Rally Championship this weekend around Whitianga and north of Coromandel Town.
Rally Headquarters are at the Mercury Bay Multi-sports Park and spectators are welcome to view the cars.
"The Coromandel communities are excellent hosts and we appreciate the input this event has to our local economy, as well as being an attraction for anyone who has a love of fast cars," Thames-coromandel District Mayor Sandra Goudie said.
‘‘The Rally is televised extensively both nationally and internationally, a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Coromandel's stunning scenery and promote our district to visitors.’’
Throughout the day the rally drivers will be tackling 121km of special stages on public roads. Road closures will be in place in Mercury Bay and Coromandel. There will be a special spectator section along Joan Gaskell Drive, Whitianga on the Saturday afternoon.
Road closures: Port Charles Road, Waikawau Rd, Tuateawa Rd, Kennedy Bay Rd. Port Charles Road from the intersection of Port Jackson and Colville roads and all of Waikawai Beach Rd, all of Tuateawa Road, and Kennedy Bay Road to house number 1424.
