Cas­tle Rock rahui placed in re­sponse to deaths

Ngati Huarere have im­ple­mented a rahui (clo­sure) on their maunga, or moun­tain, Mo­tutere/cas­tle Rock un­til fur­ther no­tice fol­low­ing the deaths of two peo­ple in re­cent months.

This clo­sure is ef­fec­tive im­me­di­ately and the pub­lic are asked not to ac­cess the site.

“As le­gal own­ers, we want to take time to dis­cuss how we man­age our maunga go­ing forward,” says Wanda Brl­je­vich, Ngati Huarere spokes­woman.

“This moun­tain is pri­vate prop­erty and no­tice is given that any unau­tho­rised ac­cess will be taken as tres­pass­ing. Ngati Huarere does not ac­cept any re­spon­si­bil­ity for any­one ac­cess­ing the site,” says Mrs Brl­je­vich.
