How it works
■ Habitat’s model of progressive home ownership supports developers to build more quality, affordable houses and connects them with eligible Kiwibuild buyers through a ballot process.
■ Its rent-then-buy model helps families build up a deposit which they can use when seeking independent finance and buy their home from Habitat.
■ People make affordable repayments and volunteer their own ‘sweat equity’. The rent they pay eventually helps build up a deposit to buy their home.
■ In the last 25 years, Habitat have built over 500 homes across New Zealand using this model.
■ It is part of the global Habitat for Humanity organisation which has worked with over one million families worldwide.
