BEST NEW METROPOLITAN RESTAURANT

Tucked away in the Kingsland shops, Phil’s Kitchen is the neighbourhood bistro everyone wishes was in their hood. The affable Phil Clark (above) can be glimpsed working his magic in the semi-open kitchen as you dine, and he’ll also appear at the bar as you leave, to thank you for coming and chat about what you liked. His French partner, Marine Peyregne, works the floor expertly, at once friendly and professional, and happy to advise on what to drink with Clark’s gorgeous food. The dishes are rooted in classic technique, but have a lovely lightness and sense of whimsy about them. Don’t miss the velvety veloutes, poured at the table over delightful melanges of seasonal ingredients – perhaps potato with soft egg, buckwheat and onion puree; or cauliflower blanketing golden raisins, blue cheese and croutons. On Wednesdays, they do three courses for $50 – outstanding value for this level of cooking. 479 New North Rd, Kingsland, ph: 09-849 7741 Lunch Wed-fri, dinner Tues-sat; mains $35-$39.50 IN BRIEF Lovely neighbourhood bistro with beautiful food
