This new Taka­puna spot de­liv­ers a fresh, mod­ern ap­proach to Chi­nese cui­sine, with in­ter­est­ing dishes from many dif­fer­ent re­gions. Ten­der poached free-range chicken thigh pairs with mouth-numb­ing Sichuan chilli sauce and peanuts in a per­fectly bal­anced dish, while del­i­cate balls of finely minced pork, prawn, shi­itake and wa­ter chest­nuts are cov­ered in chewy sticky rice and served in a bam­boo steamer. The space has been thought­fully de­signed, with dark wood pan­elling, a mix of booth, ban­quette and ta­ble seat­ing, plus quirky decor such as Seletti Hy­brid bone china plates that have been turned into lamp shades. At­ten­tion to de­tail is again ev­i­dent in a great drinks list, with a small but high-qual­ity wine se­lec­tion, quirky cock­tails and a wel­come se­lec­tion of Kiwi craft beer.
