SOUL BAR & BISTRO

15/20

Cuisine - Good Food Guide - - Auckland -

As such a long-standing fixture of the Viaduct restaurant scene, Soul could easily be overlooked for newer, edgier options. It shouldn’t be, however – the food here is consistently good, and at times outstanding, with the lengthy menu catering to almost every whim. Seafood is the mainstay and they do it very well – a couple of recent highlights were trevally carpaccio with lime and passionfruit dressing, granny smith apple, avocado and jalapeno, and a near-perfect ravioli of Waikanae crab with saffron and shellfish butter sauce. The waitstaff are friendly, informed and efficient and the wine list is great, with an extensive by-the-glass selection. The vibe here is always buzzy, and if you can nab a spot on the deck on a perfect Auckland day, it’s hard to top.
