Boasting what’s arguably the best view in Auckland, 53 floors high in the sky, The Sugar Club is naturally an appealing destination for visitors to the city. But there’s also plenty for native Aucklanders to enjoy – play spot the landmarks while you enjoy a drink in the good-looking bar, then settle in for a meal in the sophisticated restaurant space, accompanied by slick service and a killer wine list. The signature fusion style of owner Peter Gordon (above) is evident in the menu, though head chef Neil Brazier also wields influence, as in the excellent appetiser of creamed paua with “Kiwi dip” and fry bread – an ingenious modern take on 70s favourites. And dishes such as spiny crayfish and Marlborough saffron linguine with pine nuts and aged parmigiano reggiano are both elegant and delicious.
