Set high on a hill on Wai­heke, Te Whau boasts the kind of vista that graces the cov­ers of travel brochures – with rows of vines in the fore­ground, then the stun­ning Hau­raki Gulf be­yond. The vine­yard has been run by the same fam­ily, Wai­heke wine­mak­ing pi­o­neers the Forsyths, since the 90s, with the restau­rant open­ing its doors in 2001. The small din­ing room is warm and invit­ing, and the food is skil­fully pre­pared and flavour­some – a dish of duck leg, wal­nut buck­wheat, pick­led thyme cher­ries, shi­itake and ox­tail dumpling was a re­cent high­light – with the bonus of an open kitchen al­low­ing din­ers to watch the chefs at work.
