HAWKE’S BAY

A long driveway lined with date palm trees leads you through the beautiful Elephant Hill grounds to the stunning, modernist restaurant. Set on the Te Awanga coast, the decor is chic and subtle, with clean lines and white furnishings, and the odd splash of teal evoking the seaside location. With a view over vines leading down to the ocean beyond, it’s a pretty special spot to enjoy the wonderful food of chef Ashley Jones (above). A smoky swede puree complements succulent lamb belly, with grilled figs, pickled pumpkin, pancetta and olive crumb rounding out an exquisite dish, while roastedto-perfection poussin sits on a bed of braised red cabbage, with oyster mushrooms and confit shallots completing the scene.
