Cuisine - Good Food Guide - - Hawke’s Bay -

You have to like surprises to dine at Ten Twenty Four – there’s no written menu for the evening degustations, just a succession of chef-owner Kent Baddeley’s creative dishes appearing before you. Baddeley’s original cooking – he describes it as “spontaneous macroseasonal East Coast food” – uses fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced exclusively from the North Island’s East Coast. You might have Origin Earth haloumi with black garlic and white anchovies, or psyllium flowers with spiced celeriac and venison rack. Taco Tuesdays are great value, with three Mexicaninspired courses for $25. The spacious, country-style dining room features quirky touches such as coloured rice paper lanterns strung from the ceiling, and the hyper-local wine list offers plenty to intrigue. 1024 Pakowhai Rd, Hastings, ph: 06-870 6440, tentwentyfour.org Lunch Tues-sun, taco dinners, Tues, dinner Wed, Fri & Sat; Degustation menus from $75 IN BRIEF Creative cooking full of surprises
