CAPITOL

Cuisine - Good Food Guide - - Hawke’s Bay -

The kind of place you recommend to out-of-towners on a Tuesday night and drop into yourself for dinner on a Friday, Capitol is a capital stalwart that’s always busy, buzzy and fun. Its Mediterranean-leaning bistro menu delivers hearty, wellexecuted dishes that work well with the thoughtful wine list – think taglialini with a richly savoury rabbit ragu or grilled beef with white bean puree and anchovy butter. The checkerboard floor, tightly packed wooden chairs and tables and contented hum of conversation mean it can get noisy, but that’s also part of the charm. And its plum position – a corner site under the Embassy Theatre with views across Courtenay Place – mean you feel very much a part of the city. The weekend brunch is also an excellent proposition. 10 Kent Tce, Mt Victoria, ph: 04-383 28555, capitolrestaurant.co.nz Brunch Sat-sun, lunch & dinner 7 days; mains $26.50-$38 IN BRIEF Smart and sassy city bistro
